Nerine Constant and Alexandra Gulick, PhD candidates at the Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research in the Biology Department of the University of Florida, join the Greenpeace ship Esperanza in the Sargasso Sea.
The Sargasso Sea is a unique region in the North Atlantic Ocean that is home to a drifting algae called sargassum, which is used by turtles and other organisms for parts of their life cycle. The scientists are collecting data including temperatures of sargassum mats to determine if the sargassum helps incubate the juvenile sea turtles who spend their ‘lost years’ in the Sargasso Sea.
