Fire Drill Fridays with Jane Fonda, Lena Gonzalez, and Maricruz Ramirez | Greenpeace USA

Actor and activist Jane Fonda welcomes California State Senator Lena Gonzalez and community organizer Maricruz Ramirez for an inspiring Fire Drill Fridays celebrating the historic climate and public health victory in California. Jane, Senator Gonzalez, and Maricruz will shed light on what this victory means for people and our planet, and the lessons along the way that can help us strengthen the climate movement.

About the guests:

“State Senator Lena Gonzalez represents nearly 1 million residents in California’s 33rd Senate District, which includes Southeast Los Angeles, Signal Hill, portions of South Los Angeles and Lakewood, and her hometown of Long Beach.
In the Senate, Senator Gonzalez prioritizes and fights for a clean environment, and is a strong voice for working families, digital equity, LGBTQ+ and women’s rights and the economic vitality of small businesses among other policy areas.

She serves as Chair of the Senate Transportation Committee, becoming the first Latina(o) to ever serve in this capacity and the only woman to serve in the last 20 years. She also serves as Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Ports and Goods Movement and member of the Senate Standing Committee on Environmental Quality. In addition, Senator Gonzalez serves as Majority Whip, one of seven Democratic leadership positions in the California Senate.

Senator Gonzalez is the proud daughter of a union truck driver father and a mother who immigrated from Aguascalientes, Mexico. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Cal State Long Beach and a Master of Business Administration from Loyola Marymount University. She lives in Long Beach with her husband Adam and their three sons Zorion, Ethan and Luca.”

Maricruz Ramirez is a community organizer with the Center on Race, Poverty & the Environment. Born and raised in Bakersfield, California, she has committed herself to volunteering and organizing in Kern County in hopes of helping the community she grew up in. Previously, she has worked with the United Farmworkers Foundation. She was also one of the six Californian members of the Sunrise Movement who marched 266 miles in summer 2021 to raise awareness and gain support for the Civilian Climate Corps.
