Abortion and the supreme court

Abortion in the United States is a highly discussed topic. There are basically two sides: “pro-life” and “pro-choice”, lately the “pro-life” group has tried to really shut down abortion clinics and make abortion illegal or at least much more difficult for women to get access to. Abortion cases are mostly discussed in the supreme court. Where a crucial decision might change the US law for years to come.

After the death of Ruth Ginsburg, Trump was quick to announce a new judge: Amy Coney Barrett, devout catholic, 48-year-old woman with 7 children. In the past she has often been criticized for her view on same-sex marriage and abortion. Coney Barrett studied at a catholic university, where se once wrote in an article that “abortion is always immoral” and should be forbidden. Although Amy said she wouldn’t let her personal beliefs influence her political decisions, “pro-life” groups still celebrate Trump’s decision, as they believe that with the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett, the chance of a restriction for abortions is much higher.

Since his election Trump has brought 3 judges into the supreme court, all three of them have “anti-choice” views. Trump promised, that under his presidency only “pro-life” judges would be nominated. Because of the quick nomination the president is being harshly criticized by many members of the democrats, as the republicans refused to accept President Obama’s decision 9 months before his final election. With the election coming next month Trump has still decided to nominate the next supreme court member himself, even though he may not be the next president. 57% of the Americans think, that the new president should decide, but the people’s voices might not be heard early enough.

So why is the nomination so dangerous for many Americans?
Since 1973 abortion has been legal in all states. This was decided in the landmark case Roe vs. Wade. Since then much has changed and now the judges in the supreme court are 6 conservatives and 3 liberals. With conservatives being against abortion it is very likely that abortion might be forbidden again.
That is a huge problem for every woman, as abortions will still be done but they will not be legal anymore. So, they will become unsafe and many women will die. The new judge also brings other problems: Amy Coney Barrett is against Obamacare, the only thing in America that is anywhere near a free healthcare system. Since Trump wants to take that down the conservative majority in the supreme court will probably help him with this.

Please vote on November 3rd and decide very wisely, what type of future you want for the United States!
