Fracking and other extreme drilling techniques are destructive to our climate, communities, and health. This dangerous extraction method is also attempting to keep the failing fossil fuel industry afloat when we know its time has passed. Today we will hear from Dr. Steingraber about the dangers of fracking, and her fight to stop it.

About the guest:
Sandra Steingraber is a PhD biologist who holds a master’s degree in poetry. She has written a trilogy of award-winning books on environmental health. One of them, Living Downstream, was adopted as a documentary film in 2010. As a co-founder of both New Yorkers Against Fracking and Concerned Health Professionals of New York, she has helped lead a grassroots citizen movement, informed by science, that resulted in a statewide ban on fracking in 2014. The story of how New York’s fracking ban was won, and Sandra’s role in that fight, is told in the 2018 documentary film, Unfractured. Concerned Health Professionals of New York has gone on to provide peer-reviewed science on the risks and harms of fracking to frontline communities, journalists, policy-makers, and elected officials, all around the world. Its signature monograph, the Compendium of Scientific, Medical, and Media Findings Demonstrating the Risks and Harms of Fracking compiles and organizes data from the more than 2,000 studies on fracking now in the scientific literature and make it accessible to non-scientists. Dr. Steingraber is one of the principal authors and editors of that report, now in its seventh edition. For her environmental research and writing, Dr. Steingraber is a recipient of the Rachel Carson Leadership Award from Carson’s own alma mater Chatham College; a Heinz Award from Heinz Family Foundation; and from the American Ethical Union, the Elliot-Black Award for protecting our planet through science and the witness of civil disobedience. Sandra likes to say that her work aims to inform, inspire, and animate the anti-fracking wing of the climate justice movement.
