Bitcoin the world’s most popular digital currency, is causing dangerous amounts of real-world pollution, and it’s become a major roadblock in the fight to phase out fossil fuels. The solution?
Changing Bitcoin’s code — something the 2nd-largest digital currency, Ethereum, did last year, reducing its electricity use by 99.95%. But most people don’t know about Bitcoin’s massive climate impact, and the first step toward changing Bitcoin’s code is raising awareness about the problem.
Greenpeace USA has collaborated with Canadian artist Benjamin @Vonwong to create the Skull of Satoshi, a towering symbol of Bitcoin’s ravenous consumption of fossil fuels and a challenge to the Bitcoin community (and the financial corporations who empower them) to work with us to change Bitcoin’s code.
